CHILD ORTHODONTICS
“Early orthodontic intervention can minimise the unnecessary extraction of teeth, with a focus on improving your child’s airway and facial profile.”
DR. MELISSA HILL
When should your child have an orthodontic assessment?
Early detection and treatment of orthodontic problems can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for invasive orthodontic treatment, unnecessary extraction of teeth and even surgery later on. From as early as 6 years of age, your child should be assessed to see if they require any orthodontic intervention. Despite this, it is important to understand that certain conditions, even if detected at a young age, are best left untreated until your child grows older. Whatever the problem, the dental professionals at Collaroy Dental will keep you well informed and guide you through the process.
Our treatment options
Orthodontic technology has evolved in recent years and Collaroy Dental is proud to offer you these modern alternatives. We have done away with the heavy metal wires and large unsightly brackets of the past. We now use more gentle wires and smaller brackets in both metal and clear alternatives, all of which can be customised with colours! We also offer Invisalign Teen for teenagers that want a clear alternative to braces. We treat patients at all stages of life, including early childhood, teens and adulthood.
What are the benefits of Orthodontics?
Along with the clear aesthetic and psychological benefits of a beautiful and straight smile, well aligned teeth contribute to better dental hygiene and the ability to speak, bite and chew properly. Research also shows that people with straight teeth experience less tooth decay, gum disease and fewer tooth extractions! A growing child’s teeth and jaws are also more responsive to treatment, making the problem more simply and quickly correctable. This is in contrast to adult patients who typically experience slower treatment, given their facial structure is already fully developed.
What causes crooked teeth?
The causes of crooked teeth and improper bites may be genetic in nature, such as unfavourable tooth size, extra or missing teeth, excessive overbites or underbites. They may also be caused by unfavourable oral habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting and thumb sucking. Medical conditions such as asthma, allergies and enlarged tonsils and adenoids are also associated with orthodontic problems. Our clinicians are trained to identify the causes of crooked teeth early, to encourage straight teeth and normal facial development the natural way.
Here are some clues that orthodontic attention may be helpful for your child’s development:
- Crowded teeth
- Protruding teeth
- Difficulty in chewing or biting
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb-sucking
- Grinding or clenching of the teeth
- Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet, or meet in an abnormal way
- An unbalanced facial appearance, such as an excessively small or large jaw.
